  • Franchise Original Sin: The '60s are now regarded as Elvis Presley's Audience-Alienating Era thanks to all the increasingly bad movie musicals he starred in, and so a number of critics, including Eddie Deezen and John Lennon, have described this film as the point where his career first began to go off the rails. While Elvis made this film, based on his own experiences in the Army, as a tribute to his fellow soldiers, his later films following this one's formula (especially after the success of Blue Hawaii) felt increasingly mercenary, such that this one's reputation declined in hindsight.
