• Misaimed Fandom: Despite Envy being thoroughly deserving of death for not only murdering Maes Hughes but taking a sickening pleasure in the act, Mustang mercilessly torturing Envy slowly and painfully with his flame alchemy is not supposed to be enjoyed by the audience. Ed, Hawkeye and Scar fear that Mustang's Sanity Slippage will lead to him being consumed by hatred, and Scar outright said in the previous episode that that is exactly what will happen if he continues down the path he's heading, knowing from personal experience what a Roaring Rampage of Revenge can do to a person's psyche. Despite this, some fans didn't get the memo and thought of Mustang torturing Envy as a Moment of Awesome. Admittedly, it's difficult not to enjoy Envy receiving karma after hearing them shamelessly gloat about the atrocities they commit over and over again, but the memo is that Mustang should kill Envy because they feel no remorse for what they've done and are therefore a threat to others' lives.
• Unintentionally Unsympathetic: For some, Envy was just too cruel to feel sorry for when their secret jealousy of humans' ability to form friendships and develop is exposed and they commit suicide out of humiliation.
