YMMV / Dream of the Rarebit Fiend

Go To

  • Nightmare Fuel: Seeing as how the premise of the comic is centered around Acid Reflux Nightmares being had by people, it almost really goes without saying. Notably, the Surreal Horror is cranked up far beyond the level that would later be seen in Little Nemo.
    • This strip starts with the main antagonist visibly running over a dog. The rest of the strip is thankfully far less graphic, but the driver of this car is rather scary with violently he act. He takes accidently running over as a challenge, and begins to plow through larger and larger objects, including an ambulance, a trolley, a retirement home, and crowd of shoppers, while commenting if the protagonist, who is just as terrified as the reader, can hear the cracking of bones, all while wearing a demented grin. Made all the worse by the fact it's actually far less surreal than most of McCay's works. The protagonist understandably swears-off rarebit once he wakes up.
  • Values Dissonance: Much like Little Nemo, ethnic stereotypes are a frequent occurrence.
    • This strip begins with the driver violently running over a dog. It' something that would have a hard time passing in most comics aimed at adults, let alone a gag-a-day strip that ran in mainstream news papers.
