YMMV / Doctor Who S33 E4 "The Power of Three"

Go To

  • Paranoia Fuel: Millions of strange cubes just appear one day, no one know where they came from or why they're here and they lie dormant for months.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Or rather, They Got Screwed Out of a Perfectly Good Plot. The idea of the Earth being targeted by creatures of Gallifreyan folklore sounds like a setup to a truly spectacular confrontation, with the Shakri's plan of creating a slow invasion using the cubes being suitably unsettling. In the episode proper, however, their potential connection to the Time Lords is completely incidental and serves as an unnecessary bit of hyping up for an invasion force that is defeated in a matter of seconds by the Doctor using only the Sonic Screwdriver, all while the mastermind apparently does nothing but float there in hologram form. Of course, the Shakri were originally going to put on a more impressive showing, but the unfathomably uncooperative actor playing them ended up forcing them to rewrite huge chunks of the script (see Troubled Production on the Trivia page).
  • Unintentional Period Piece: While the episode doesn't pile the contemporary pop culture references on quite as hard as many episodes from Russell T Davies' era did, there are nonetheless a few bits which instantly date the episode to the early 2010s, including the Doctor briefly playing with a Wii, and the boardroom line-up on The Apprentice being Lord Sugar, Karren Brady, and Nick Hewer.
