YMMV / Death Note – Ep. 37: New World

• Broken Base:
  • The episode has split the fanbase in two groups: Those who believe that Light's actions were justified, and Near won by luck more than intelligence, and those who believe that Light had his defeat coming and Near achieved his victory fairly.
  • The anime's changes to the ending. Some believe that the anime does justice to Light's character by painting him in a sympathetic light and showing that he is still ultimately just a man in the end, while others believe that Light didn't get a satisfying enough death and the manga ending was far superior for its catharsis. As well as Light's Undignified Death as opposed to the somewhat dignified way he goes out in the anime.
• Cry for the Devil: Even if he was evil by the end, Light's death can still be hard to swallow due to the flashbacks to his youth, showing what potential he had as a person had he never picked up the Death Note.
• Signature Scene:
  • Light's Evil Laugh after he's exposed as Kira is one of the most famous scenes in the entire series, and most likely the first thing that is referenced whenever this episode is brought up.
  • Light's death at the end of the episode, and the series as a whole.
