YMMV / Dead Island 2

  • Awesome Moments: The intro showcases everything you need to know about the Slayers.
    • The first Slayer we meet is Amy who jogs 12 MILES through zombie-infested territory and none are able to bite her, let alone grab her.
    • Ryan manages to scam his way into the plane by dressing up as a fireman and acting as if he's responding to an emergency.
    • Not to be outdone in terms of sneaky tricks, Bruno manages to steal the pass QR code of the man behind him while he got distracted by an earthquake by quickly snapping a picture with his phone.
    • Carla simply rode up to the front of the airplane on her bike, tossed one of the solders her keys and walked on as if the world ISN'T falling apart around her.
    • Then there's Jacob who manages to climb onboard a flying airplane all the while grinning like a mad man.
    • Where he then runs into Dani, who snuck on by hiding in a trunk. She playfully requests Jacob's ticket before grabbing his cigar with a smile plastered on both their faces.
  • Catharsis Factor: The endless ways you can kill and maim zombies and the intricate gore system has proven to be quite satisfying to the playerbase.
  • Goddamned Bats: By the end of the game, every zombie is a Goddamned Bat, but skull-level zombies deserve a particular shout-out. These are hardlocked as being at least 5 levels higher than you are, which is enough to virtually guarantee that any hit that connects with you is a one-shot kill. They're placed with no particular rhyme or reason throughout the first 5 maps, and while you can still beat one with smart tactics, it isn't worth any more XP or loot than a standard zombie.
  • Scrappy Mechanic: A lot of fans were not happy to find out that the co-op multiplayer component for the game, while allowing for up to three players at once, only works if every player is at the same place story-wise. That means if you have a character who's already advanced well into the main quests (for example, reaching Venice Beach), and a friend has just started their character, you can't invite them to join you nor vice versa. You either have to wait for them to catch up in singleplayer or start a completely new character yourself.
    • The inability to sell or scrap Legendary and uniquely-named Superior weapons irked some fans as well. When you choose a new Slayer after having finished with your first/previous one, the Storage Locker's contents from that previous character carry over as well, which likely has one or more members of the above two categories inside, typically a much higher level and thus virtually useless for the low-level early game. And even by the time your new Slayer does reach the level requirement, they've likely already repeated finishing the mission that rewards those weapons again, resulting in two copies of the same item. Really the only solution to freeing up space in the Storage Locker is taking the old items out, dropping them, exiting to the Main Menu, and going back in, erasing them completely, whereas being able to take and sell them would have provided a really nice cash boost when starting out.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: Los Angeles looks absolutely breathtaking in this game, from how faithful it's recreated to the Scenery Gorn of the outbreak. The gore system is also one of, if not the most amazingly well-made to date, as almost every form of trauma is accurately depicted on the bodies of the zombies, with their intestines in particular having a stunning amount of detail not even seen in most other gory games.
