YMMV / Daryl Hall & John Oates

Go To

  • Applicability: Although "I Can't Go for That" and "Maneater" are both commonly assumed to be about relationships, John Oates has stated that neither of them actually are. Despite this, he welcomes listeners to come up with alternative interpretations of the duo's songs, and has revealed that many of them were deliberately written to be applicable to multiple different situations.
  • Covered Up:
    • "Everytime You Go Away" was originally a track on Voices in 1980, but with the likes of "Kiss on My List", "You Make My Dreams" and "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" on the album, it never got released as a single. Five years later, Paul Young scored a #1 US hit (and #4 in the UK) with his cover.
    • Zig-Zagged with "She's Gone". First released by Atlantic Records as a single in early 1974, it only peaked at #60 in Billboard. A few months later, the group Tavares had a #1 hit on the R&B chart with their version (and slightly improved the original's showing on the Hot 100, getting to #50). Then, in 1976, after they moved to RCA Records and had their Breakthrough Hit with "Sara Smile", Atlantic re-released "She's Gone", which finally climbed up into the Top 10 and became one of their best-known songs.
    • Inversely, they were one of several acts who's recording of "Someday We'll Know" was significantly more successful and popular than the New Radicals' original.
    • Also inversely, the group's cover of "Family Man" is much better-known than the original song by Mike Oldfield, partly because the song, which is relatively unchanged in arrangement between versions, is extremely left-field for Oldfield, typically known for ambient-driven Progressive Rock.
  • Memetic Mutation: "Out of Touch" ThursdaysExplanation
  • Signature Song: "Rich Girl", "Maneater" and "You Make My Dreams" would be the top candidates.
  • Song Association: "Out of Touch" is frequently associated with Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, thanks to the game's overall popularity with fans of 1980s music.
