• Memetic Mutation: Phil slapping an apple out of Jana's hand became a minor Running Gag on MST3K. Though it actually isn't that weird in the movie itself; he thinks she committed the murder he was accused of and is mocking him by offering him the apple.
• Retroactive Recognition: This was the first movie that John Williams composed the score for.
• The Scrappy: Jana is a complete Jerkass who uses her looks and dirty tricks (most notably, Wounded Gazelle Gambit and cheating during the race) to get her way. She insults and berates Phil in front of his friends, then wonders why they don't seem to like her. She demands that Phil dance with her (and this is immediately after the aforementioned insults and demeaning) even though he is still rightly angry with her, and then she criticizes him when he does so. Given all this, the fact that she is clearly signposted as the love interest is appalling. To her credit, she does eventually apologize to Phil, but by then viewers' opinions are likely set in stone.
• Values Dissonance: When Phil freaks out about Jana working as a cigarette girl.
