YMMV / Chicory: A Colorful Tale

Go To

  • Breather Boss: The fight against the manifestation of Blackberry's inner thoughts is a lot more straightforward than the climactic bosses before and after.
  • Heartwarming Moments: After facing a manifestation of Chicory's anxiety in Gulp Swamp, Pizza heads up to Dinners, where their sister Clementine invites them to the pizzeria. There, Pizza tells her what happened, and she asks them if she should beat Chicory up for insulting them. Pizza tells her that Chicory has been going through a lot and shouldn't be beaten up, and Clementine understands and assures them that she's got their back. The two siblings then share a hug, and Clementine gently reminds Pizza to take breaks from being a Wielder, even offering to help them design a new logo for the pizzeria.
  • LGBT Fanbase: While not exactly queer-centric, there are still visible queer characters- Pickle is Nonbinary, Beans and Pepper can get into a sapphic relationship, Macaroon comes out as bisexual, and Pizza themself can present themself however you want to with no barriers on gender- and the plot near the climax can easily be read as the two main characters subverting a long-standing tradition that has only brought both of them major grief, the same able to be said about queerphobia in the real world.
  • Popular with Furries: It's a game about cute anthropomorphic animals that deals with issues of mental health in a fairly graceful manner, features an in-game drawing minigame, and as noted above, has a following with the LGBT crowd. Of course this would be a slam dunk with furries.
  • Scrappy Mechanic: Progressing in Grub Depths requires you to rely on giant hermit crabs, who can be herded using the brush. However, their movement can be rather erratic as you can't really control how they go about cleaning the paint up and you also have to deal with other mechanics like making sure you blow up the paint-activated bombs at the right time.
  • Ugly Cute: Basically every bug living in Grub Meadows, especially once Prunus joins you to help translate their screeches. Queen Drosera in particular is a giant centipede who looks like she would be a terrifying boss battle in any other action game, but instead she's a big softie who gushes about how adorable you are.
  • The Woobie:
    • Chicory starts off as a mess, who feels like a failure because she felt inadequate as a wielder. Growing up, all she cared about was being one, and training with Blackberry, she felt like she had to hide herself from her. In the last trial she did at Brunch Canyon. Blackberry, motivated by her own perfectionism, belittled and berated Chicory for who she thought she was, knowing Chicory was trying to hide from her, threatened to take the brush, and even tried to pull it out of her hands. It was then the black forest first appeared, and ever since she only got worse, slowly spiraling downward in a cycle of anxiety and depression before Pizza pulled her out of it. She had nobody to talk to about it before Pizza, which is why they come to feel deeply grateful for them by the end of the game.
    • Pizza themself is one as well. They explicitly say in the Spoons Island Trial that they didn't know where they were going or what they were doing until they picked up the brush, and since then felt like a boring person who didn't deserve the brush. It takes Chicory's admiration to realize their own self-worth.
