YMMV / Charly (2002)

Go To

  • "Friends" Rent Control: How does Charly, a full-time art student, afford her luxury apartment in New York City? Mark evidently wasn't helping out with rent because she couldn't have kicked him to the curb so easily if his name was also on the lease.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • Sam rushes into his house and it seems like something bad has happened to Charly since she was just diagnosed with cancer. It turns out she's in the backyard throwing a party with most of their friends and acquaintances.
    • Adam finally says "mommy" just before Charly goes to the hospital and dies.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Charly is surprised that Sam voted for "a soil grubbing global warming corporate puppet". The scene is meant to show how they're coming from different political backgrounds. The scene works even better after Mitt Romney, a Mormon politician, ran for president in 2012 and received overwhelming support from Utah.
  • Tear Jerker: Good luck getting through the film's ending without shedding a few tears.
  • The Unfair Sex: Charly is cheating on her boyfriend throughout the first act. Her behavior is never called out, nor does the film depict it negatively.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: At the start of the film Sam has a Palm Pilot-like device which was popular before the advent of smartphones. Mark and Charly also have a video-chat with each other, a then-emerging technology which impresses her family. And while some characters have cell phones, they mainly use landlines: Charly and Mark share a cordless telephone with a digital answering machine and Sam uses a payphone to call his father from the airport. This all places the film firmly in the late '90s to early '00s.
  • The Woobie: Mark probably has the worst deal of all the characters. He doesn't come off as an evil ex-boyfriend since he genuinely cares for Charly, she just changes her worldview.
