  • Anvilicious: In case it wasn't obvious, Stephen King does not like cellphones.
  • Ho Yay: Tom is canonically gay. Clay... is not; however, he does kiss Tom twice in extremely somber, emotional moments, and also muses about getting to know him better a lot.
  • Narm: The scene with the thousands of Hive Mind Phoners chanting a song would and should be incredibly creepy... if the song chosen wasn't Eduard Khil's happy-sounding upbeat vocalisation of "I am very glad, as I am finally returning back home", better known as the famous Mr. Trololo song.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: It's really, really obviously a product of the 2000s. The cell phones central to the plot are all depicted as 2000s-era flip phones, and there's no mention of social media (which would almost certainly come up in a story involving cell phones written later). A major scene of the film even has a thousand Phoners showcasing that they are all part of a Hive Mind... by having the whole lot of them belting out a constant loop of the "Tro-Lo-Lo" song.
  • The Woobie: Alice Maxwell is a high school sophomore who spends the first half of the book recovering from the trauma of having her mother go insane and try to kill her, then witnessing more violence in an hour than most people see in their lives. Even though she does seem happier near the end, the end for her comes a bit short.
