YMMV / Bio-Hunter

Go To

  • Awesome Music: The Bio-Hunter main theme is a frantic mix of fast-paced and tribal instrumental music that serves as the perfect fit for an OVA about fighting a demonic virus that turns people into mutant monsters.
  • Fridge Horror: So... that underground prison cell in the house of the father of the first demon virus victim... did he have that built just to contain his daughter or was it already there to begin with? And if so, what exactly was he using it for...?
  • It's Short, So It Sucks!: At a single 60 minute OVA most viewers will be left feeling that there simply isn't enough time to do everything with the characters and story to give Bio-Hunter any sort of lasting appeal. It certainly has decent potential, but probably would have worked much better as a Monster of the Week miniseries rather than what is essentially a short movie.
  • Nightmare Fuel: What the demon virus does to its victims isn't pretty. The opening scene features a young couple having sex when the girl begins complaining of an intense hunger and snarling that she needs to feed. A split second later her boyfriend is knocked back with a missing arm and the scene cuts to the woman down on all fours, her partner's severed arm clutched between the teeth of a freshly formed mouth on her breast! By the time the heroes find and cure her she's covered in demonic little heads sprouting from all over her body and has to be chained up in a prison cell. Oh, and this is just the first demon virus victim encountered in the OVA! It gets worse from there.
    • The Big Bad Seijuro Tabe is just as horrible, but in a different way. Unlike most of the other victims it's implied that he liked the power the demon virus gave him and ignored treating it until it was too late, resulting in the virus ultimately possessing him and taking over his body. In this state he has to hunt down and feed on the livers of young women to keep himself from rotting and doesn't even seem to fully realize that he's no longer truly among the living! Oh, and he can now sprout Combat Tentacles from all over his body, has a giant gaping maw in his torso and can survive having his own head bitten off.
  • So Okay, It's Average: Probably the biggest single flaw against Bio-Hunter is that while it has a pretty decent premise and characters there is just no getting past the fact that it doesn't do much to stand out against other very similar works that came out around the same time period like Wicked City or Devilman which had almost identical stories. It's not that Bio-Hunter is outright bad, it's ideas have just been done a little better by other movies and shows that have also explored similar themes.
  • Values Dissonance: Koshigaya bragging about dating some of his students wouldn't be seen as too much of a stretch for Japan during the time period the story takes place in, but in western countries like the US and UK such behavior is generally greatly frowned upon, especially since the Turn of the Millennium brought teacher/student misconduct issues into public focus. Any professor getting romantically or sexually involved with their students nowadays would likely result in a ton of public backlash and the university taking action against them.
