- Jerkass Woobie: Banjo only got into the mess he's in because he was a brat, but it'll still break your heart to see him homesick and scared.
- Narm: Banjo seems either unable to keep his tongue in his mouth or thinks he's a dog, as his tongue is hanging out of his mouth in a lot of different scenes.
- Tear Jerker: If the alley scene where Banjo cries under the rain gets you, then you'll be bawling during the scene where Crazy prays to God for Banjo's sake.
- Values Dissonance: Telling your kid to get you a switch was normal in The '40s (when the film is set) and only slightly less so in The '70s (when it was made), and a kid who ran away from home as a result would be seen as a brat who wouldn't take what was coming to them. Nowadays, it's seen as a perfectly good reason to run away from home.
