YMMV / Aliens vs. Predator 2

Go To

  • Contested Sequel: The Primal Hunt expansion, developed by Third Law Interactive, is widely considered to not living up to the standards of Monolith in terms of level design, such as a dependence on spawning enemies from behind, together with many AI issues and unclear objectives.
  • Even Better Sequel: Considered such to Aliens versus Predator, with a greater emphasis on scripted storytelling, developed characters, and offering three interconnected stories.
  • Goddamned Bats: The facehuggers - small, hard to shoot, and instantly kills the player if they latch on to them.
  • Magnificent Bastard: The Predator "Prince" is a brilliant hunter who leads an attack on a military outpost, burning through the spine of soldier Rykov and earning his lifelong hatred. When the Prince encounters Rykov decades later, he is shown to be a canny and deadly opponent, outwitting his human foes and using the explosion of a transport ship for cover against the humans and Xenomorphs alike so he might find and kill Rykov to reclaim his personal mask.
  • The Scrappy: The Primal Hunt expansion added some indigenous, non-xenomorph creatures to LV-1201, including a worm, bull, and reptilian gorilla. Many players and reviewers complained that they look cartoonish and out of place in the AVP universe.
  • Slow-Paced Beginning: Each campaign spends a while building atmosphere before you see any real combat. In the Marine campaign, it takes a good 10-15 minutes going through a couple maps worth of scripted sequences before you actually start fighting Aliens. The Predator campaign starts out with an extended tutorial. The Alien campaign has two whole levels dedicated solely to fairly scripted stealth, first as a facehugger and then as a chestburster.
  • Tear Jerker: Hall's death, as well as Tomiko's Heroic Sacrifice.
  • Unintentional Uncanny Valley: Due to the engine limitations of that time all close-ups on Sgt. Andrew Harrison a.k.a. Frosty make him look like a caricature of human being.
