YMMV / A Supe of a Man

Go To

  • Base-Breaking Character: Lois' appearance and romantic relationship with Clark is seen as either a good way to connect to Superman lore or a pointless addition that doesn't really add anything to the story.
  • Better Than Canon: While this isn't intended to be a Fix Fic, it does manage to reconstruct the Cape Punk genre by recontextualizing the superheroes as simply symptoms of a larger problem Inherent in the System that Vought created, which deftly shifts the story away from the “superheroes are stupid” Author Tract onto a much more interesting and complex subject.
  • Catharsis Factor: After all the shit they pull in canon, watching Superman casually outpace the other Supes is fun to watch. Special mention goes to him for beating A-Train's speed record.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple: Most readers were hoping Clark would get together with Annie since they are both superpowered beings who have some chemistry. Clark's romance with Lois is considered by some to be disappointing and shoehorned.
  • Gateway Series: For those not impressed with the Shallow Parody or relentlessly bleak nature of the show or the comic it was based off of, this fic could be seen as a Lighter and Softer adaptation that keeps the biting satire and dark tone without sacrificing clear heroes you can root for.
  • Moral Event Horizon: While Homelander was already over the line, he loses all of the audience's sympathy when he threatens Jonathan Kent, causing him to suffer a fatal heart attack.
  • Unexpected Character: Auntie Sis and the Superdupers originate from the comics, but were excluded from the TV show (from which this fic takes a majority of inspiration), so their presence came as a bit of a shock. Sis being revealed to be the Wonder Woman of this universe was even greater of one, understandably.
