  • Bowdlerise: Due to its controversial title, in several performances, the play was renamed Giovanni and Annabella, ‘Tis Pity, or The Brother and Sister.
  • Follow the Leader: It was written not long after Shakespeare's plays, and... you can tell.
  • Referenced by...:
    • David Bowie based two songs on his album after this play. "'Tis a Pity She Was a Whore" is directly named after the play and uses its themes metaphorically, while "Sue (Or in a Season of Crime)" is a direct adaptation.
    • In The Cinema Snob and Brows Held High's joint review of Tromeo and Juliet, when presented with the twist that Tromeo and Juliet are siblings, and decide to have a relationship anyway, Oancitizen asks why Troma didn't just make an adaptation of this play instead.
    • In the pilot episode of Midsomer Murders, "The Killings at Badger's Drift", a staging of the play is being rehearsed. It's also related to a vital clue — Victim of the Week Emily Simpson vaguely mentions someone being "just like poor Annabella", and it turns out that she is murdered due to accidentally witnessing the Brother–Sister Incest between Katherine and Michael Lacey.
  • Very Loosely Based on a True Story: According to Wikipedia, this play may have been inspired by the true story of French siblings Julien and Marguerite de Ravelet, executed in Paris in 1603 on charges of incest and adultery.
