Go To

  • Acclaimed Flop: Critics gave the film positive reviews (74% "Certified Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes, and 66 out of 100 "generally favorable reviews" on Metacritic) and it received an Oscar nomination for its make-up. Unfortunately, the film flopped at the box office, making only $24.1 million worldwide.
  • Actor-Inspired Element: Colin Farrell designed many of Valka's tattoos himself.
  • Box Office Bomb: Though the film's production budget was around $30 million, it only made a little over $20 million worldwide.
  • Creator Killer: Director Peter Weir hasn't directed another film since this one, given that it was a Box Office Bomb and despite mostly positive reviews from critics.
  • Fake Nationality: British Jim Sturgess and Mark Strong, and Irish Colin Farrell and Saoirse Ronan as Eastern European characters.
  • Similarly Named Works: There is now a 2020 sports drama film with the same title, The Way Back.
  • Typecasting: The fact that Khabarov is played by Mark Strong - usually a villain - should tip viewers off that he's not the most wholesome character.
