  • Franchise Ownership Acquisition: Basil Rathbone's first two outings as Holmes were in A-level pictures for Twentieth Century-Fox, both set in the Victorian era. When Universal Studios took over the series, the tone, setting, and production values changed dramatically.
  • I Am Not Spock: For Basil Rathbone, whose association with the role of Holmes meant producers and audiences would never see him as anyone else.
  • The Other Darrin: There were two Moriarty's - Lionel Atwill (who had played Dr. Mortimer in "The Hound of the Baskervilles") played him in "The Secret Weapon" and Henry Daniell played him in "The Woman Green". George Zucco who played Richard Stanley in Sherlock Holmes in Washington, had earlier played the professor in The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes for Fox.
  • What Could Have Been: Universal initially considered continuing the series after Rathbone's departure. The role of Holmes would have been given to Tom Conway (who had also replaced Rathbone in the role for the radio series).
  • You Look Familiar: An eagle-eyed viewer will recognize that many different actors appeared multiple films.
