• Alan Smithee: This was Maurice Hurley's first contribution to the series, but he was so dismayed by Gene Roddenberry's re-writes that he requested the pseudonym "C. J. Holland" be used instead of his own name.
• What Could Have Been: Troi was originally supposed to appear in the episode, which can be seen in the original script, but was cut from it for unknown reasons. Many of her lines were given to Tasha Yar.
