Trivia / Star Trek: Strange New Worlds S2E09 "Subspace Rhapsody"

  • Ascended Meme: A popular meme from a few years ago showed how closed captioning had one of Spock's breakdowns thanks to the Psi 2000 virus subtitled as "sobbing mathematically". In this episode, Spock attempts to work through the pain of Chapel coldly breaking up with him by metaphorically describing it as a calculus problem!
  • The Cast Showoff: Many of the cast get to demonstrate their singing chops in this outing.
    • In particular, Celia Rose Gooding is an accomplished Broadway performer, so it's fitting that Uhura (who was also established as musical when played by Nichelle Nichols, who sang professionally) receives a Day in the Limelight in this episode.
    • Then there's Christina Chong and Ethan Peck, both of whom are given multiple solo parts in this episode for very good reasons. The former has actually written songs and as of this writing has a forthcoming LP.

  • What Could Have Been:
    • Attempts to do a Star Trek musical episode originated with Ronald D. Moore on TNG. While it was a passion project for Moore, the production team opposed the idea (and Moore's pitch fared no better later on DS9). Linda Park was also interested in doing a musical episode of ENT, but her pitch met with the same fate as Moore's. There was even talk about doing one on Picard (though it would be hard to imagine it fitting with that show's general tone). The closest the franchise had ever come to doing a musical episode prior to "Subspace Rhapsody" were Vic Fontaine on DS9 and VOY's "Virtuoso".
    • The Klingons participating almost didn't happen as some of the production crew found the idea of Klingons doing a K-pop routine almost too silly. An alternate version of the sequence with a traditional Klingon Opera was also shot just in case, but the Klingon K-Pop version was ultimately selected for the final cut.
  • You Look Familiar: Bruce Horak (who played the Enterprise's Aenar chief engineer Lieutenant Hemmer last season) returns as Garkog, the Klingon captain.
