• Dawson Casting: Jan Shutan was thirty-six at the time, playing the much younger Lt. Mira Romaine.
• Prop Recycling: The glass-covered portal of the medical decompression chamber appears to be a door left over from a suspended-animation pod in "Space Seed".
• Reality Subtext: L.I. Underhill, writing in Eruditorum Press, noted that Shari Lewis writing a story about a woman's identity being subsumed by external characters has some interesting parallels with Lewis's relationship with her most famous creation, Lamb Chop. Watching the episode with that idea in mind makes it a good bit more interesting.
• Recycled Set: The Memory Alpha monitor room was the reused control room set from "Whom Gods Destroy".
• Running the Asylum: Although Gene Roddenberry initially hired professional science fiction authors to write a lot of the early stories, several fan scripts were accepted and produced in the second and third seasons. This episode in particular was submitted by married couple Jeremy Tarcher and Shari Lewis, who had been known to have extended conversations with a woolen sock.
