Trivia / Sir Mix-A-Lot

Go To

  • Baby Name Trend Killer: "Baby Got Back" is often held as the point of origin for "Becky" as a slang term for a narrow-minded and casually racist white woman. While Becky (and its full form, Rebecca) had been declining from the peaks of their popularity at that point, by the mid-'90s Becky had fallen out of the top one thousand girls' names even as Rebecca remained modestly popular. Notably, nowadays younger Rebeccas are more likely to abbreviate their name to "Becca" than "Becky".
  • Creator Backlash:
    • Sir Mix-a-Lot has admitted to being incredibly annoyed by "Baby Got Back", as he has re-written it at least 3 times for different shows and has virtually eclipsed the rest of his career. He has since embraced the song's ubiquity, probably because it still makes him a lot of money. However, he's also had great fun lampooning it—for example, appearing on Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me and trading jokes with host Peter Sagal in 2010 (in relation to a bit about pre-crash Washington Mutual bankers performing "Baby Got Bucks").
    • He also disowned his Rap Metal cover of "Iron Man," saying it was a weak rip off of Run–D.M.C.'s cover of "Walk This Way", as well as "Put 'Em On The Glass" for essentially being "Baby Got Back," only twice as vulgar.
  • Hitless Hit Album: His first album, Swass, went platinum. This was an impressive achievement, considering that hip-hop was a fairly new genre at the time and Sir-Mix-A-Lot was on an independent label. However, the only song from it to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 was "Posse on Broadway", which peaked at #70.
  • One-Hit Wonder: "Baby Got Back" topped the Billboard charts and made him a household name, but he also had a couple underground hits before that: "Posse On Broadway" and "My Hooptie".
