Trivia / Rebirth of Mothra 3

Go To

  • Accidentally Correct Zoology: When Mothra Leo first arrives in the late Cretaceous period, there are a couple glimpses of a Brachiosaurus-like sauropod living alongside Tyrannosaurus and Triceratops, as a seeming case of Anachronism Stew. Years later, it would turn out that titanosaurs (including Alamosaurus, the sauropod that was a contemporary of T. rex) were closely related to brachiosaurs.
  • Accidentally-Correct Writing: Almost. The dialogue says that Ghidorah caused the extinction of the dinosaurs 130 million years ago. There was a mass extinction near the end of the Triassic period approximately 130 million years ago, although in that case the dinosaurs survived. When Mothra travels back in time to battle Ghidorah in the past, it's clearly meant to be the end of the Cretaceous, which would have been closer to 65 million years ago.
  • Late Export for You: The English language adaptation of this film was released in the United States as a Sci-Fi Channel TV premiere on May 31, 2003, roughly four-and-a-half years after its Japanese theatrical release, but was not available anywhere else in English (the eventual iTunes release was Japanese-with-English-subtitles only) until September 2014, when a Blu-ray set of all three films with English and Japanese tracks was released.
  • No Export for You: The film is an odd case, as it technically averted this trope for some time. Despite owning the rights to the entire Rebirth of Mothra trilogy and releasing the first two movies on DVD, Sony never released the third movie. However, it did air on the Sci-Fi Channel for a few years, and was also available on Crackle for some time. It wasn't until 2014, when, in light of Godzilla (2014), Sony started releasing the Godzilla movies they owned on Blu-Ray, and they announced that the entire Rebirth of Mothra trilogy would be getting a triple-feature Blu-Ray release, thus averting this trope entirely.
  • The Other Darrin: Instead of being played by Sayaki Yamaguchi, Lora is played by Misato Tate for unknown reasons (Yamaguchi was still involved in the production, though, as she narrated the film).
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Toho had plans for a solo King Ghidorah film before ultimately placing him in this film as the main antagonist.
    • Before settling on Ghidorah, Toho considered a completely new monster that would have been fire-based as the villain. After the suits decided a more established monster would work better, Rodan was briefly considered.
    • King Ghidorah in this film was originally going to have a split lower jaw.
    • Other dropped concepts included Mothra Leo going to Feudal Japan instead of the Cretaceous period, King Ghidorah being tied to Nostradamus's end times prophecy, and actual confirmation that he's Desghidorah's father.
