Trivia / Nukie

  • California Doubling:
    • Orapi is described as being in central Africa, but the scenes were shot in southern Africa.
    • The interior of the Space Foundation (clearly an American organization) was actually filmed in Munich.
  • Colbert Bump
    • It was largely unknown until scathing reviews popped up on the Internet from the likes of Something Awful and Matt Carracappas in the early 2000's, but it was arguably put into the limelight via the Cinema Snob's review.
    • It's also gained further infamy from RedLetterMedia showing off their huge collection of Nukie VHS tapes and DVDs, all submitted by fans who really want to see them watch it on Best of the Worst (which they refuse to do, partially because Jay saw it as a kid) or want to contribute to the gag of them have a big collection of Nukie home media. As of March 2019, they had 100 VHS copies! In December 2022, they ultimately destroyed all but one of the over 100 tapes that they amassed over the course of nearly a decade, intentionally inflating the price of the surviving copy so that they could auction it off for charity (ultimately selling for over $80,000).
  • Creator Backlash: Producer Michael Pakleppa later said the film was "the most wrong-gone thing (he'd) ever done in (his) life".
  • International Co Production: A South African-produced film with assistance from Germany for filming locations and effects.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: The film has only been released on VHS in most countries (apart from Laserdisc in America and DVD in its native South Africa). It is also unavailable on streaming platforms. Thanks to RedLetterMedia putting almost every single remaining VHS copy of Nukie they had into a wood chipper, it's safe to say that the last known copy of the film on eBay had better not go back to them.
