- Dark Horse Casting: Finding professional actresses too "polished" or overly feminized, Karyn Kusama sought to cast an unknown. Michelle Rodriguez had only been an extra beforehand. Apparently her audition was terrible, but she had more physical power than the rest of the auditionees.
- Dawson Casting: Diana, who's 18, was played by Michelle Rodriguez at 21 or 22.
- Dyeing for Your Art: Both Michelle Rodriguez and Santiago Douglas had to train for five-six days a week for four months to prepare.

- What Could Have Been: Several potential producers and financers tried to pressure Karyn Kusama that a female protagonist was "unappealing" for such a story, or at the very least to change her to a white woman. She was however adamant that Diana be Latina.
