Trivia / Freedom Fighters (2003)

Go To

  • Acclaimed Flop: Despite getting positive reviews and good player reception, both praising the simple, yet effective squad command mechanics, the game failed to meet publisher EA's expectations. Some have attributed this to backlash against American Patriotic Fervor in the aftermath of the Iraq War, in spite of the game's Danish origins and various digs at the Eagleland concept.
  • Dummied Out:
    • Subverted. The Liberty Island bonus level can be unlocked and is perfectly playable, but is quite obviously nowhere near finished. The alternate version of the Giant Mook enemy doesn't appear anywhere else either.
    • By hacking the game, it's possible to obtain an normally unusable Combat Knife weapon.
  • Sleeper Hit: The game sold decently but didn't manage to leave a lasting impression on the Sixth Generation's era.
  • Stillborn Franchise: Although well received and now the host of a respectable cult following, hopes for a sequel have waned considerably with the most recent promise of one having been made again in 2007; so far, nothing has come of this. IO Interactive has mentioned that they've secured the rights in 2017 after they left Square Enix. The game's re-release on digital distribution in 2020, with minor updates to get it to run on modern systems without mods, has further sparked hopes of another entry in the franchise.
  • What Could Have Been: The game was originally called Freedom: The Battle for Liberty Island, but was changed as the last minute due to the Liberty Island level being Dummied Out.
