Trivia / Father Ted S2E5 "A Song for Europe"

Go To

  • Accidentally-Correct Writing: The episode revolves around the "Eurosong" contest, which is a thinly-veiled Expy of the Eurovision Song Contest (as well as what the contest is colloquially known as in a few countries, including Ireland). Coincidentally, in 1996, the year the episode aired, the actual contest was temporarily rebranded as Eurosong (although Ireland's fortunes at the actual contest were quite different from Ted and Dougal's in the episode).
  • Non-Singing Voice: Played for Laughs; Ted's singing is done by Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy (who wrote most of the music for the series), and is so completely different to Ted's voice it merely adds to the ridiculousness of the song.
  • Technology Marches On: The ability to research obscure bits of music online would likely have shut down Ted's plan to plagiarize the Norwegian song almost immediately, or at least forced him to acknowledge that he failed to carry out even the most basic research on the song.
  • What Could Have Been: Steve Coogan was intended to play compère Fred Rickwood, but couldn't make it so Irish comic Jon Kenny stepped in.
  • You Look Familiar: Jon Kenny had appeared on the show previously as Michael the cinema owner in "The Passion of Saint Tibulus".
