- Billing Displacement: Noticeably averted. Despite Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock's roles as Oskar's parents, Thomas Horn is the only actor to feature prominently on the movie poster. Indeed, you would have to look quite closely to realize Tom Hanks or Sandra Bullock were even in it.
- Too Soon: The most common complaint from critics. The harsher ones say that the book was written specifically to cash in on an American tragedy, the nicer ones simply say that Americans have not yet had time to fully process 9/11 and that Foer is preening by offering contrived insights dressed up in flowery language. A common complaint is that the story didn't need to be about 9/11, the father could have died in a car wreck or a fire or a fishing accident and the story wouldn't have lost anything significant other than marketable iconography.
