• Follow the Leader: If you haven't figured it out yet, this series was brought about by DC's success with Kingdom Come. Both are stories about aged heroes while dishing out religious imagery, though while Kingdom Come is about the legacy of superheroics, Earth X deals with the origins of everything about the Marvel Universe in a future setting.
• Reality Subtext: Played for Laughs when a Watcher is transported to the "Marvel Bullpen became the Fantastic Four" universe. Jack Kirby, as the Thing, asks Stan "Mr. Fantastic" Lee if he's gonna take credit for that, too. Stan Lee was famously accused of overplaying his contributions to the Marvel mythos, and Jack Kirby was especially bitter about it.
• What Could Have Been: While working on the original feature for Wizard, Alex Ross initially planned on playing the concept for laughs, showing all the Marvel heroes becoming old and out of shape. But as he developed it further, he decided to take the idea more seriously and brought in Jim Krueger to help flesh it out, resulting in the project evolving into something different and more complex.
