Trivia / DiRT

  • California Doubling: Fans worked out that the supposed "New England" stages in Rally 2 are actually based on nearby roads and trails to the Dirtfish free roam location in Washington state. Presumably the location change was to allow the graphical flourish of orange autumnal leaves on the trees.
  • Distanced from Current Events: Colin McRae died in a helicopter crash along with his son and 2 other people the day after the first DiRT was released in the UK. Out of respect, Codemasters withdrew their advertising campaign for the game.

  • Fan Nickname: DiRT Rally is sometimes cheekily referred to by fans as the "Dark Souls of rallying" or racing games in general due to its realistic vehicle handling model verging more on simulation than accessibility.
  • In Memoriam: To real-life driver Colin McRae, who did a lot of the consulting on car handling for earlier games.
  • Role Reprise: Nicky Grist returned in DiRT 4 to serve as one of the game's English-language co-drivers, years after he lent his voice in Colin McRae Rally 2005.
