Trivia / Bluebeard (1972)

  • Creator Breakdown: Richard Burton hoped that this film would be a light-hearted breather after his previous film, The Assassination of Trotsky, flopped. Instead, shooting for Bluebeard coincided with no shortage of private pressure for Burton. Just after filming began, his beloved brother Ifor died, sending Burton into a deep depression which knocked him off the wagon. Along with his drinking, Burton's relationship with Elizabeth Taylor reached one of its periodic low points: Taylor showed up repeatedly on the set to make sure Burton wouldn't fool around with any of his co-stars, once slapping Joey Heatherton while she filmed a love scene with Burton. After this humiliation, Burton had a fling with co-star Nathalie Delon, which led to Taylor appearing on a date with Aristotle Onassis and an ugly public scene when they dined with the British Ambassador in Budapest. The couple divorced soon after filming wrapped, with Burton plunging directly into several other projects in an effort to forget the experience.
