Tear Jerker / The Tomorrow Series

  • The pets dying in the first book. The dead working dogs on the Linton farm had once been a litter of puppies of the Linton's old dog, Millie, who is dying herself at that point. Ellie knew the dogs for their whole lives and worked with them, and now they are dead on their chains. Just because nobody was there to free them or at least give them water when they needed it.
  • That the invasion happened during a town festival in Wirrawee. One on Australia Day. The people of Wirrawee were first celebrating their history and present happily, only to be attacked and imprisoned by some foreign power simply for being around. A great day of fun in the sun turned into the most disastrous day in their lives.
  • The real story of the Hermit. His wife and son were essentially already burning alive due to a bushfire, and he shot them to end their pain.
  • Also, the whole life story of Lee's parents. They fled the Vietnam War as boat-people and arrived in Australia, where they started a restaurant, had several children and became a fairly popular part of Wirrawee's community. And then, war gets them anyway. Indeed a great example of a "Shaggy Dog" Story.
  • The state Corrie is in after being shot. She isn't dead, but in a coma and doesn't wake up again during the course of the series.
  • Although everyone knew that it would happen, it is pretty sad that Kevin was taken prisoner for trying to get help for his girlfriend Corrie.
  • In the second book, Fi is chased by a young male enemy soldier after an attack on the Wirrawee camp. Her friends come to her help with some makeshift weapons and wound the soldier lethally - and then they have to watch him die in a heartbreaking manner for hours before Lee decides to Mercy Kill him with a knife. Then, they lay him to rest in a nearby creek, and Robyn says a short prayer.
