  • When the group sneaks in to the hospital to check on a comatose Corrie, Ellie learns that the other patients there have been tenderly caring for her despite there being no telling when or if she will wake up.
  • While in prison in the third book, Ellie develops some rapport with the enemy soldier who brings her meals. The woman is noted to be older and kindly-looking, leading Ellie to suspect she was a maid or cleaner who got conscripted. At Ellie's lowest point when she's facing execution for blowing up Cobbler's Bay, the woman even slips her some bubblegum and calls her a "brave girl".
  • After escaping Stratton with a group of children who'd been living wild since the war, the group manages to put on Christmas to lift the childrens' spirits. They steal a small feast's worth of food from occupied farms, fashion some improvised presents, and even hold an impromptu church service. Not only is Ellie surprised by just how well the group manages to pull it off, but she's deeply touched when a couple of the children actually give her a present in return.
  • When Ellie takes in the news that the feral children are going to be evacced...and realizes how much she's bonded with them.
"How had I become so caught up in the lives of these little tackers? One minute, they'd been a hopeless nuisance, marching off on their own, getting lost, causing Darina's death; the next minute, they had wound fifty meters of baling twine around my heart and pulled it so tight I wasn't sure I could survive the pain of losing them."
  • Throughout the series, New Zealand is depicted as a stalwart ally to Australia, being one of the few nations with boots on the ground fighting to liberate Australian territory. Papua New Guinea is also stated to have landed troops with a similar goal, despite earlier being hesitant to do so for fear of provoking the enemy nation.
