Tear Jerker / The Greatest Showman

Go To

  • P.T. Barnum locking the "freaks" out of Jenny Lind's post-show soiree, leading to Lettie and company's defiant performance of "This Is Me."
  • Jenny Lind's reprise of "Never Enough".
  • Barnum's Darkest Hour, leading to his Heel Realization with "From Now On."
  • Charity's musical number "Tightrope." Near the end of the song it shows the silhouettes of Charity and her husband dancing happily, only for Barnum's shadow to vanish with the flutter of a curtain, leaving Charity on her own.
  • Anne and Phillip's duet "Rewrite the Stars" is a beautiful yet heartbreaking scene as Anne rebuffs Phillip's advances after his parents called her "the help." Even though Phillip truly believes that they belong together, Anne is much more cynical, not willing to believe that society would accept a black acrobat being romantically involved with a wealthy, white heir. In the song, Anne even admits that she while she does love Phillip back, she truly believes that they would end badly.
    "You know I want you
It's not a secret I try to hide
    But I can't have you
We're bound to break and my hands are tied"
  • Anne's reaction to Philip running into a burning building to save her when she was outside and safe. When she thinks he paid the ultimate price, her anguish is palpable.
    • Her reprise of the refrain from "Rewrite the Stars" at Philip's bedside, affirming her wish to stay with him.
  • The quote from the real P T Barnum right before the credits roll. ‘The noblest art is that of making people happy.’
  • During "A Million Dreams", we see little clips of what happens after young!Charity moves away—including two shots of young!Barnum trying to take care of his ill father, then standing alone in the snow by his grave, then having to steal off the streets. The entire story is sad by itself, but take in the lyrics playing. He's singing about the world he dreamed of, the world he thought he'd make, and this is the one he's stuck in. The song sounding very uplifting only exacerbates the tragedy.
    • Made even worse by the entire fucking film. Because life screws him over, Barnum never realizes when he does have enough and is always trying to get more and it ruins his relationships with Jenny, Charity and the circus. His desire to prove his father-in-law wrong ruins everything in his life.
  • When Barnum and Charity greet the latter's parents at a party, Charity's mother is clearly excited to see her daughter (and granddaughters, who she has never met), but her enthusiasm is promptly shut down by her Jerkass husband.
  • The exchange between Barnum and Charity on the beach. Barnum finally realizes that him always wanting more brought hardship on his entire family. The way his voice shakes as he sings to Charity and the single tear that drips from his eye seems to add extra emotional effect.
