  • The moment when Evelyn sees the page in Diane's handwritten notes where she has managed to solve the proof. There's a "Yes!" in the margin and the doodle of a staircase. What makes this particularly heart-wrenching is that this was the last moment that she was happy. Once the euphoria passed, Diane didn't know what else to do because she'd just achieved the only goal she was given to accomplish in her life. She took her own life afterward because she lost all sense of purpose in her life and couldn't get past that feeling of emptiness.
  • Mary crying over the fact that her biological father didn't want to come and see her despite now knowing where she lives and having been so close. It's only at this point we realize that, despite appearing to be content in her life with Frank, she secretly always hoped that she was cherished by her father too.
  • The "goodbye" scene. Mary is screaming and clinging on to Frank, unable to believe that he'd break his promise that he'd never leave her. Frank is hurting as well, which is why he pretty much runs out of the house when the foster parents suggest that he should leave. The way he momentarily slumps forward against the steering wheel shows what a huge battle it is for him to leave Mary. And the worst? Mary flings herself against the windowpane to keep Frank in sight as long as possible as if prolonging her vision of him might make him come back to her.
    • Frank even says "we've discussed this...and cuts himself off, unable to say ad nauseum without falling to pieces; harkening back to the beginning in a truly heartbreaking way...
  • What was about to happen to Fred and the other cats if Frank hadn't intervened.
  • The reunion scene. At first, Mary is so hurt that she keeps hitting out at Frank, but finally, she just lays her head down on his shoulder and cries, telling him how much she missed him. When Frank starts crying as well, Mary draws his mouth into a smile and says, "You're smiling." That's her way of comforting him. Also counts as a Heartwarming Moment.
