“I wish you were here, man…”

  • Becky is revealed to have died shortly after marrying Dante because of a drunk driver. Their unborn child was also killed. Happy Ending Override at its most vicious.
  • Dante visiting Becky's grave and crying about how alone he feels without her.
  • Veronica telling Dante how shitty her life has been, with her ex causing a rift between her and their daughter, among other things.
  • Dante snapping at Randal over how making the film is forcing him to relive the worst moment of his life (losing Becky) when Randal ripped on Dante for not wanting to shoot a scene at Mooby's. This leads to Dante suffering a heart attack.
    • When Dante is ranting, even Jay of all people looks saddened listening to him.
  • Randal sneaks into Dante's hospital room to show him a rough cut of his film, which are actual clips from the first Clerks. Dante subconsciously watches it in a theater with Becky and says it is the best movie he's ever seen. With that, he tells Becky he is ready to go with her.
Becky: But it's not over! Don't you want to see how it ends?
Dante: I trust the director. He wasn't just my favorite filmmaker. He was my best friend.
    • Randal's tearful explanation of the movie's new direction is just as affecting.
Randal: This is the way I see you. You're the main character in my Star Wars. You're not the Dak. You've always been the Luke… so you're the hero of my movie too. (voice breaking) You've always been my hero, Dante.
  • Randal screaming his Please, Don't Leave Me line as Dante dies. Randal has been so afraid of Dante leaving him that it just makes this scene that much more heartbreaking.
    • Randal's actor, Jeff Anderson, really delivers the emotion in that moment. It's a tear-jerking moment just to listen to him say that line.
  • At Dante's funeral, Randal eulogizes his best friend and paraphrases his most famous line:
Randal: (tearfully) You're not even supposed to be here today.
  • The final shot of the film is Randal quietly whispering that he wishes Dante were there, with a vision of him appearing right next to him as the camera pans out in the Quick Stop one last time.
  • While we know, by seeing Dante's Dying Dream, that he forgave Randal, and Randal himself understood it from Dante's gesture, the fact still remains that he will live the rest of his life with the memory of his best friend's last words being an angry "The Reason You Suck" Speech, in which he called him “a gaping wound of a human being.”
  • Kevin Smith's closing narration reveals that Randal went on to become an acclaimed director until retiring at the ripe old age of 90. While it's heartwarming to hear that Randal finally made something of his life after the events of the trilogy, it's extremely sad when you realize he lived another 40 years without his best friend Dante by his side.
