"This is a Joey episode! If you're not from Brooklyn, we recommend watching with subtitles."
Yami Yugi

Mai explains the backstory of her Face–Heel Turn and duels Joey.

Tropes:

  • Achievements in Ignorance: Joey is able to beat Mai without having any idea how he did so. Also, he didn't know until this episode that Duel Monsters cards have effect text on them.
  • Arbitrary Skepticism: Yami's convinced that souls don't actually exist. Y'know, despite being one himself. He chalks his continued existence up to stamina. Oodles of it.
  • Brick Joke: Kaiba's Douche-Sense informs him Joey is mocking him, prompting him to instruct Mokuba to remind him he should tell Joey to "go fuck himself" the next time he sees him. By the end of the episode, Kaiba re-joins with the others, and Mokuba does exactly that.
  • Hollywood Hacking: Duke tricks the Industrial Illusions security system into having cybersex with him so he can buy time to unlock the doors.
  • Informed Ability: Discussed; when Joey implies he is likely to win as Mai has a terrible victory record, Mai points out that she actually did win plenty of her duels, her victories just kept happening offscreen.
  • It Will Never Catch On: Apparently, Yami came up with the idea for Pendulum Summoning, but thinks it won't watch on.
  • Memetic Loser: Joey apparently is one in-universe- and Mai became one as well by virtue of having lost to him, which was the primary motive for her Face–Heel Turn. The episode also addresses it by pointing out how Mai didn't actually deserve this reputation - she did have plenty of victories, they just kept happening offscreen.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Deconstructed; Mai reveals she actually resents being constantly remembered only for her boobs, which apparently played a part in her joining Dartz. She even tries giving Joey a taste of it by referring constantly to his balls.
  • My Significance Sense Is Tingling: Kaiba is revealed to have a "douche-sense" that allows him to know whenever Joey insults him.
  • Running Away to Cry: Poor Duke.
Duke: No, Tristan! Because it's not! Dungeon Dice Monsters uses dice!
Joey: I activate my trap card, Skull Dice! A card that very specifically requires a die to play it!
Duke: Oh God, look at the time! I have to be somewhere.
    (runs quickly off-screen, sobbing)
