Recap / Yu Gi Oh First Anime Series Ep 17 A Last Minute Match The Invited Model

Go To

Seto Kaiba's third Game Master is the model Aileen Rao, who plays ruthless mind games with men and takes away what's most important to her opponent when she wins. While unimpressed with normal Yugi, she changes her tone when she sees Yami Yugi and vows to crush him in a game.

Aileen arrives at the game store and asks for interesting games, preferring to strategize, read, and trick her opponent than rely on luck. Yugi’s flustered denial of being Anzu's girlfriend gives Aileen a hint as to who’s most important to Yugi, and when they arrive at her apartment she uses a hypnotic command to freeze Anzu solid, making it so she can't see or hear them. To save her, Yugi will have to defeat Aileen in the strategic game of Raijinhal, which has complex rules based around statistics and reading an opponent.

Yugi and Aileen start to play, but using her words and the threat of Anzu's life, she psychs him out to read his moves easily and take a lot of his pieces. Yugi decides to force draws, and when they both lose the king she decides to change the ruleset-–and up the stakes even more, as now Anzu's life is endangered by her pet tiger for every piece he loses. Yugi realizes Aileen used Anzu as a hostage to make him easier to read, and decides to use her own strategy against her with his own unnerving words. Yugi eventually wins by taking her king with his queen, learning that she used hypnotic words to make her opponents think they'd lost something important when they hadn't. He compliments Aileen for her strength, but when they go to free Anzu she slaps him so hard he turns back into Yugi–-she can't remember a thing and thinks he interrupted her dance lesson with Aileen.

Afterwards, Seto Kaiba fires Aileen for her failure, but she tells him Yugi is stronger than he is. Yugi and Anzu see Aileen off at the airport, and she hopes that their next game will be a game of love.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Batman Gambit: Aileen holds Anzu hostage to make Yugi easier to read, also using her words to unnerve him.
  • Compelling Voice: Aileen uses a hypnotic suggestion to freeze Anzu solid, and it's revealed that she also hypnotized anyone who lost to her to make them think they lost whatever's important to them.
  • Defeating the Undefeatable: Much like Kaiba, Aileen never lost a game before she ran into Yugi.
  • Evil Counterpart: Aileen is one to Anzu and Dark Yugi. Like Anzu, she's a dancer and achieved her dream of being an idol, and like Yami Yugi, she prefers reading her opponents and psyching them out over luck-based games.
  • Graceful Loser: Aileen isn't too upset at losing to Yugi.
  • Heel–Face Revolving Door: Aileen seems to turn good after Yugi defeats her, but come Death-T she's working for Kaiba again and is even worse than before.
  • Lady of War: Aileen never raises her voice, is good with strategy and tactics, and comes very close to defeating Yugi before she loses. Death-T reveals she's good at physical fights, too.
  • Near-Villain Victory: Aileen handily wins her Raijinhai game with Yami Yugi at first.
  • Panthera Awesome: Aileen has a pet tiger, which she threatens Anzu with.
  • Villainous Crush: By the end of her debut Aileen develops a crush on Yugi, hoping that the next time they meet it'll be in a game of love.
