  • Played straight with the shots of Yugi being engulfed in flames via Joey's Hinotama magic cards, as they are removed. The second time this happens, Yugi loses his jacket as it is blown away by the force of the card's effect, whilst it just vanishes between cuts in the dub.
• Brainwashed and Crazy: Joey is controlled by Marik, forcing Yugi to duel his best friend. Tea temporarily is with her being released after she is made to sit down in a restraining chair.
• Chained to a Railway: Or in this case, an anchor over deep water.
• Damsel in Distress: Tea is mind-controlled by Marik and strapped to a chair while one of his minions has a dumpster suspended over her with intention to crush her, forcing Kaiba and Mokuba to not intervene with the duel.
• Dirty Coward: Marik essentially uses Tea as a hostage to keep Kaiba and Mokuba from interfering with the duel between Yugi and his mind-controlled best friend.
• Everyone Has Standards: While Kaiba is selfish and only thought about looking for the other Egyptian God cards rather than help Yugi rescue his friends, even he thinks that Marik’s sadistic duel conditions are too much and attempts to stop it.
• Sadistic Choice: Marik constructs this near flawlessly. The duel continues til someone dies and no one can stop the duel under the threat of Tea being crushed.
• Villain Has a Point: Marik restricts Slifer. Yugi finds Slifer isn't safe even if permitted.
