Recap / The Wonder Years S 05 E 23 Back To The Lake

Go To

Summer has approached, and Kevin is looking forward to having at least one more fun summer. Winnie, Paul, and Wayne have all taken Summer jobs; Winnie is a waitress at the burger joint, Paul is an assistant manager at a Chinese restaurant, and Wayne is working on the loading docks at Norcom. To Kevin's dismay, Jack goes after him to get a summer job as well, but Kevin refuses to do so. Norma declares that if Kevin won't get a job, he'll have to make up for it by doing extra chores around the house, and she puts Kevin to work, cleaning the house. Kevin comes across a picture of Cara, who he met at the lake the last summer and had not seen since. Kevin eventually takes a job at the Chinese restaurant where Paul works, only to find his job will be helping with the cooking as opposed to being an assistant manager like Paul. Eventually, when driving himself and Paul to work, Kevin suddenly decides to ditch work and drive to the lake to find Cara. They first try the drive-in, which has been torn down, but they find her working at the gas station. Cara breaks the news that she now has a boyfriend in the area, but after returning home, Kevin appreciates his relationship with Winnie.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Bittersweet Ending: Cara now has a boyfriend, but Kevin leaves on good terms with her (though, as the narrator says, he would forget his promise to write to her), and is happy with his relationship with Winnie.
  • Easily Forgiven: Somehow, Kevin will keep his job after this episode, despite not showing up for work and without calling in.
  • Karma Houdini: Kevin decides not to go to work and suddenly decides to go to the lake, taking Paul with him, against Paul's will. While no retribution is shown or mentioned, Kevin will continue to work for Chong's Chinese after this episode (while Paul's employment will not be seen or mentioned again).
  • No Sympathy: Kevin, while complaining about having to get a job, gets none from either Paul or Winnie, both of whom are now employed.
