Recap / The Wonder Years S 04 E 13 Whos Aunt Rose

Go To

Grandpa Arnold is back in town. But he announces that he's taking the whole family to the funeral of their Great Aunt Rose. The problem is, the family doesn't even really know her. Kevin and Wayne in particular don't understand why they're supposed to mourn a relative they didn't even know. But eventually they come to understand how their Aunt was a part of the Arnold family legacy, and how much she meant to their grandfather, as well as the rest of the family.

Includes examples of

  • Meaningful Funeral: By the time they get to the burial site, Grandpa Arnold gives a meaningful speech of the importance of family, and how Aunt Rose loved gatherings, even when they only either happen for weddings or for when someone in the family dies. Both Norma and Jack have tears in their eyes.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Grandpa Arnold shows a rare instance of true anger, when he kicks Kevin and Wayne out of the car during the commute from the viewing to the burial of their Aunt Rose, for their fighting and not taking things seriously.
  • The "Fun" in "Funeral": A few wackier relatives show up at the viewing, including an eccentric cousin of Jack's who gives the boys $20.00 to split.
  • You Keep Using That Word: Everyone keeps referring to the episode's title character as "Aunt" Rose, despite the fact that as Granpa's first cousin, she wasn’t really anyone's aunt. Grandpa lampshades it at one point.
