Recap / The Monkees S 1 E 31 The Monkees At The Movies

Go To

An arrogant teen idol mocks the Monkees during the filming of his latest movie. Now playing: Beach Blanket Battle!

This episode stars these groovy new tropes:

  • Accidental Dance Craze: All four guys start hopping around from the hot sand on the beach. Although there’s no music and they’re all moving in different ways, a movie producer thinks it’s a dance and hires them as extras.
  • The Prima Donna: Frankie Catalina, Corrupted Character Copy of Frankie Avalon, the squeaky-clean beach movie idol.
    • Once the group gets Frankie fired and replaced, Davy starts to become just like him. He quits because he sees it's ruining his character.
  • Shout-Out: The producer finds Mike and Peter loudly pretending to barter all Peter’s best records for one David Jones album – the one Davy actually recorded in real life before joining The Monkees.
  • That Syncing Feeling: The record player type. Frankie's lip-synch to the movie's single goes out of control.
  • This Means War!: The Monkees’ response to Frankie’s insult barrage.
  • Tiny Guy, Huge Girl: One of the bikini babes in the cast is very tall. She's paired with not-exactly-tall Davy.
  • Uncanny Valley Makeup: Davy impersonates Frankie’s makeup artist and dolls him up as a werewolf.
  • Watch Where You're Going!: Frankie bumped into Peter and yelled at him. When Mike points out Peter was standing still, Frankie finds something to insult about each of the Monkees. Hilarity Ensues.
