Recap / The Mighty Boosh Electro

Go To

Vince slaps Howard of out his jazz trance and tries to play him a cassette of the Human League, who "invented music," much to Howard's displeasure.

Howard tries unsuccessfully to impress two female visitors to the zoo, who reveal that they are in an electro band called Kraftwerk Orange. When Howard is called away, the girls recruit Vince to sing in their band.

Howard urges Vince to have more loyalty to the zoo, and discourages him from seeking fame as a musician. Howard recounts his own past dreams to be a jazz musician, which led him to trade his soul to the Baron-Samedi-esque Spirit of Jazz. Vince ignores Howard's story in favor of listening to his demo tape, and expresses his disloyalty to the zoo.

At rehearsal, Vince clashes with Kraftwerk Orange keyboardist Johnny Two Hats, causing the latter to quit the band. The girls order Vince to find a replacement before their high-stakes gig in three hours under threat of stabbing.

Vince apologizes to Howard and tries to get him to step in for Johnny Two Hats, but Howard declines. He next asks Bollo, who proves unqualified.

Howard plays the trumpet, summoning the Spirit of Jazz, who once again offers his services. Naboo helps Howard to temporarily imprison the Spirit of Jazz inside a Hoover so that Howard can play unimpeded.

Howard shows up in the nick of time to save Vince from being stabbed by the electro girls, but the Spirit of Jazz (still inside the Hoover) escapes while Naboo is in a stoned stupor, and possesses Howard, causing him to strip and play jazz trumpet onstage.

The Mighty Boosh episode "Electro" contains these tropes:

  • Blackface: The Spirit of Jazz is a dark-skinned Black man played by white Briton Noel Fielding in face paint.
  • Borrowin' Samedi: The Spirit of Jazz is a menacing Black man in a top hat, tails, and skull makeup who is also a ghostly spirit with the ability to possess people.
  • Demonic Possession: The Spirit of Jazz's goal is to possess Howard and take over his body in order to force him to play jazz music.
  • Double Entendre: About half of the Spirit of Jazz's lines are homoerotic double entendes about "being inside" Howard (i.e., possessing him). Howard himself tells him to stop because "it's weird."
  • Ghosts Abhor a Vacuum: Naboo traps the Spirit of Jazz, who's some sort of jazz ghost, in a vacuum cleaner, temporarily neutralizing his threat.
  • Modern Minstrelsy: The Spirit of Jazz is a menacing, weirdly sexual villain who speaks with a Southern American accent played by a white guy in blackface, made in the 21st century. This episode's use of racial stereotypes got the whole series removed from Netflix in 2020.
