  • Blatant Lies: When Cassandra learns that Lam knows Ezekiel Jones's voice, she claims that he couldn't speak due to his jaw fusing shut by being struck by lightning as a child. Jones was posing as her associate at the time.
  • Call-Back:
    • The episode references Flynn's previous trip to Shangri-La, as well as his quest for The Spear of Destiny. Charlene also references Flynn's initial Sherlock Scan where he tried to identify how many cats she owned.
    • The head of DOSA claims to have leaked the information of the bomb and magical artifact encountered in the first scene of the show.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: DOSA is targeting the Library because, as far as they're aware, the Librarians are the center of multiple magical incidents and in possession of multiple dangerous artifacts that are a threat to national security (all of which, technically, is true).
  • Mistaken Nationality: Cassandra tries to trick a Chinese-looking man in a suit, whom she assumed to be one of Lam's Mooks. She starts talking to him in Mandarin, asking for his help finding her suitcase. He initially helps out wordlessly, but then spits out in frustration, "Look, lady, I don't speak Mandarin!" It turns out he's actually a DOSA agent.
  • Monkey King Lite: Jacob learns martial arts from the Monkey King himself and even surpasses him, at least in the non-magical department. Apparently, whoever holds Monkey's staff at a certain time of day is the one in charge of Shangri-La.
  • Sleeper Agent: The head of DOSA claims that Baird is one, planted by her to infiltrate the Library.
  • Took a Level in Badass: After a few weeks in Shangri-La, Jacob is no longer a mere brawler, having been trained by the Monkey King himself.
  • Unwanted Rescue: When Flynn stumbles on Charlene in a cage as one of Lam's magical oddities, he tries to rescue her, only for her to point out that she's there of her own free will in order to hide from Apep. If Apep finds and possesses her, then he can destroy the Library and bring about the end of the world.
