Recap / The Legend of Vox Machina S01 E11: Whispers at the Ziggurat

Go To

Vox Machina launches a final assault against the Briarwoods atop the Ziggurat. Battling the dark magic of Delilah and the vampiric strength of Sylas, a worried Vex and an unhinged Percy try to save their siblings. But their best efforts may not be enough as the Briarwoods near completion of their secret ritual.

Tropes

  • All for Nothing: Percy attempts to shoot Ripley, but Keyleth reminds him that the Briarwoods will hear the gunshot and ruin the party's ambush. Ripley then escapes, which angers both Percy and Orthax but doesn't give away Vox Machina's position. This proves to be pointless, however, as not even a minute later, Orthax influences Percy to march up the ziggurat to confront Sylas.
  • Anti-Magic: Delilah casts Silence on Scanlan, robbing him of his ability to use his magic music for a time. After it wears off, however, Scanlan turns the tables and casts Silence on her, even returning the same 'shush' gesture against her.
  • Big Damn Heroes: After getting knocked off the Ziggurat, Grog re-enters the fight at the climax, saving Pike from Sylas and then holding him down so Keyleth can blast him with Sunlight.
  • Big "NO!": Delilah gives out one as Sylas is vaporized by Keyleth's Sunlight.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends on the immediate aftermath of Keyleth's Heroic Sacrifice, with Pike's astral projection running out at the worst possible moment.
  • Field Power Bonus: Being surrounded by the roots of an age-old tree, like the Sun Tree, gives druid Keyleth a major boost, even weakened as it is.
  • Kill Steal: Percy (under Orthax's influence) gets pissed when Grog and Keyleth finish off Sylas.
  • Kill Us Both: Keyleth hesitates to fire her Sunlight at Sylas for fear of hitting Grog. Grog insists that he can take it. He can, Sylas can't.
  • Logical Weakness: Scanlan needs to be able to speak to use his magic, so Delilah uses a Silence spell that temporarily mutes him. Scanlan repays the favor later since Delilah also has that weakness.
  • Revenge Before Reason: Inverted. It's when Percy starts putting reason before his revenge, such as struggling not to shoot Dr. Ripley as she runs away from the impending fight with the Briarwoods so the noise doesn't alert them to Vox Machina's attack, that Orthax starts putting more overt control over Percy, compelling him to march up to the Briarwoods and call them out to face him.
  • Taking the Bullet: In something that wasn't possible in the campaign, Keyleth takes the Finger of Death Delilah casts that was meant for Vex.
  • Weakened by the Light: As a vampire, Sylas is weakened by sunlight and radiant spells. Pike is able to keep up with him thanks to her regaining the Everlight's blessing, and Keyleth communing with the suntree and summoning the light stored within seems to cast an effect that cuts of his mental influence over Vax and Cassandra. She ultimately finishes him off with a Sunlight blast fueled by the Sun Tree's roots, though given Grog suffered 3rd degree burns holding Sylas still in the path of the attack, there's also an element of Kill It with Fire.
