Go To

Sophia is given money that is intended to be put into a Certificate of Deposit, but she buys a Cuban prizefighter instead.

Tropes:

  • Chekhov's Skill: On top of acting and boxing, Pepe is also quite the actor, a skill he demonstrates to the girls when they catch him rehearsing. Later when Pepe forgets his violin solo at his Julliard audition, he recites the monologue he gave to the girls and gets accepted.
  • Dub Name Change: The European Spanish dub changed Pepe's name to Pippo and his nationality to Italian (which has the side effect of inadvertently creating an additional plothole in failing to explain why Sophia, an Italian native, never even bothers trying to speak to him in Italian).
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title
  • Stereotype Flip: Pepe the Cuban boxer purposely plays into the stereotype of a dumb Latino boxer (including apparently being unable to speak any English outside of "Kill Gonzales!"), and the Girls go along with it without questioning until they discover that there's a lot more to Pepe - he not only can speak fluent English, but he's also a very talented violinist. Dorothy at first expresses indignation that Pepe would think she and her friends were ignorant enough to buy into that stereotype, until Pepe correctly points out that they did buy into it without questioning.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: A fairly obscure one — Sophia plots to win money by managing a boxer who is also a talented violinist afraid of injuring his hands in a fight. The protagonist of the 1937 play and 1939 movie Golden Boy is a boxer and violinist who faces the same dilemma.
