Recap / The Goldbergs S 5 E 19 Flashy Little Flashdancer

Go To

A Plot: The family doesn't support Beverly when she decides to take up dance with the Frentas.

B Plot: When Emmy starts dating a cool guy, Adam thinks their friendship is in jeopardy.

  • Badass Longcoat: Adam buys a replica Michael Jackson jacket to try and impress Emmy, which instantly earns everyone's respect in a party until he and Emmy have a loud fight and make things awkward.
  • Bait-and-Switch: At the end, Adam acknowledges his mistakes with Emmy, biking in the dark and climbing a trellis to reach the window of...Shy Bry, so he can tell Bry how to win Emmy's heart and make her happy.
  • Bluff Worked Too Well: Beverly gets Erica involved in events by calling her and lying that Geoff's dating someone else. She arrives home in tears and not at all happy at the deception. However, she forgives Bev after being thoroughly entertained by her flashdancing.
  • Must Make Amends: When the family mocks Beverly's dancing and are later served bad lasagna by a depressed Bev, Barry and Erica set up a two-hour musical apology...which she accepts in the first second. Murray is also asked to apologize and attempts to dance to show support, but hurts himself, and ends up just verbally encouraging her.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: An interview with the real-life Emmy at the episode's end has her state that she's never been romantically interested in Adam, but still values his friendship.
  • Plot-Mandated Friendship Failure: Emmy passes up time to hang with Adam in order to hang out with "Shy Bry(an)", which makes him worry that it's the beginning of their friendship's end. When he confronts her about it at a party, it only gets worse, with her complaining about how she accepted being in the background when he got together with Dana, then Jackie, but Adam clearly can't reciprocate.
  • Sucks at Dancing: Beverly's flashdance, instead of awing her family, ends up making them laugh. Murray literally injures himself laughing. The Frentas' stage performance also goes badly at first, mainly because the drama made them skip practicing, but they do...decently, at the end.
