Recap / The Goldbergs S 3 E 4 I Caddyshacked The Pool

Go To

A Plot: Adam forms a plan to avoid swimming at school - even though a friendship could be affected.

B Plot: Barry joins a school Social Awareness Club formed by Erica.

  • Appearance Angst: Adam's motivation for avoiding swimming, particularly since he's going through puberty. Towards the end, it's brought to Coach Mellor's attention that Adam's not the only one feeling this way, so he lifts the restriction of only wearing trunks without shirts (for boys) or one-piece swimsuits (for girls) to the pool.
  • Cassandra Truth: Dave Kim, when accused of "Caddyshacking" the pool, points out that he's allergic to nuts and couldn't have even touched the candy bar safely, but nobody believes him.
  • Fake Charity: After Erica bans him from the club for causing mayhem and being greedy, Barry ends up forming his own club and hosts a "Barity" fundraiser to get himself new shoes. However, he and Erica eventually reconcile and they work towards a genuine good cause.
  • Jerkass Ball: Barry grabs it HARD in this episode. First he repeatedly calls Erica a poser when she announces her intention to do a fundraiser after being inspired by “feed the world”. Then when he notices it becoming popular he attempts to sabotage it out of jealousy. He then attempts to join Erica but only because he thinks he can use it for money to buy new basketball shoes (which he openly admits) and when Erica turns him down he sets up a donut stand to steal her donations. His response, he tells Erica to admit she’s a poser. Erica calms him out on this and they reconcile later.
  • Never the Obvious Suspect: Adam attempts to use this trope to his advantage when everyone else in gym class suspect him to be the one that "Caddyshacked" the pool, and successfully gets suspicion away from himself...though he feels guilty when it works too well and Dave Kim gets blamed.
  • The Power of Apathy: Murray convinces Adam to be honest about "Caddyshacking" and feel better about himself by stating that he may be feeling awkward now, but a time will eventually come where life will drag on him so hard that he'll simply stop caring about what others think, which is why Murray feels alright walking around the house in his undies.
  • Putting the Pee in Pool: Having recently watched a similar scene in Caddyshack, Adam tries to get swimming cancelled by putting a candy bar in the pool. However, Coach Mellor recognizes the technique for what it is (though not in time to stop the pool being drained once), and punishes the entire class when nobody confesses, particularly prime suspect Dave Kim.
  • Sabotage to Discredit: Barry's initial motivation for joining Erica's club is to prove she's a "poser" that only formed the club for personal reasons instead of genuinely wanting to do good, and get the club members so disorganized that they can't settle on what issues to focus on.
  • Unishment: Mellor attempts to get the "Caddyshacker" to confess by threatening to make the gym class run laps every day. When everyone admits that they'd prefer running over swimming, Mellor switches tracks and threatens to make every class about swimming.
