Recap / The Goldbergs S 1 E 1 Circle Of Driving

Go To

A Plot: Hoping to receive a car for his birthday, Barry is shocked by what his mother gives him.

B Plot: Adam asks Pops for advice on "the finer things in life".

  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Beverly finds out about Adam and Pops' visits to a waffle house where a cute girl works, shows up, and comments on how it'll affect his bathroom habits in front of her.
  • Drives Like Crazy: Pops drives into a drive-through restaurant while trying to lift Barry's spirits.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Adam only refers to Zoe McIntosh as "Waffle Girl".
  • From Bad to Worse: Adam drops the trope name when Murray's failure to teach Barry how to drive not only causes a traffic jam, but also gets Beverly's attention (because Adam, who was in the backseat, called her).
  • Fun with Subtitles: To show that Murray isn't actually as abusive to his children as he sometimes sounds, some of his statements are given polite subtitles that express what he truly means. Except for the final time, when Barry crashes into the garage and the subtitles match the statement of "I raised a moron."
Murray: You're not a total moron all the time.
    Subtitles: I love you.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Barry yelling that he isn't high-strung upon receiving a disappointing gift.
  • My New Gift Is Lame: The episode starts with Barry's 16th birthday party, receiving a small gift that he assumes is car keys (when he doesn't have a licence)...but turns out to be a locket with his mom's photo, so he can keep her close to his heart. Murray, in turn, gifts an REO Speedwagon cassette, which isn't even in the Top 40s.
  • Right Behind Me: After Adam gets upset at his mother talking about his bathroom habits, he yells at her and expresses interest in touching his crush's boobs, only realizing afterwards that said crush and the entire rest of the restaurant are now staring at him.
  • Title Drop: After Pops' crash, and despite Pops' protests, Murray decides it would be safer for everyone if he passed his keys down to Barry.
Murray: You lose your keys, Barry gets your keys. It's the...circle of driving!
  • Well, This Is Not That Trope: Adam starts the episode (and thus the whole series) by commenting on close, loving families...and then states that his wasn't one of them.
