Recap / The Goldbergs S 10 E 3 Jenkintown After Dark

Go To

A Plot: Due to the events of the previous episode, Adam is now working on a film set alongside Hasselhoff...but as the protector of an orange safety cone. Dismayed with his useless position, Adam decides to reconnect with Brea, despite both of them having promised to keep their distance from each other while she's getting set up at college. Beverly decides to get involved to avoid Adam embarrassing himself, at least partly out of spite when Adam states he wants to talk to someone other than his mom about his current issues, but ends up making Brea feel self-conscious.

B Plot: Joanne gets a well-paying job at a posh Philadelphia law firm. Barry's thrilled that they're going to be rich, and her parents are glad that she's finally found a career she's stuck with, leading to problems when Joanne actually starts working and immediately feels out-of-touch.

  • Absurdly Youthful Mother: While bowling with Johnny and Carla, Carla decides to introduce Adam to a girl named Trish that she met in a car accident. Despite barely looking older than Carla, Trish has a son who she brought with her to the bowling alley, who immediately starts calling Adam his new dad despite Adam's protests (as well as Adam's own comments on her absurd youth).
  • Amoral Attorney: Joanne's first day on the job has her going through paperwork for a client fighting the Environmental Protection Agency and told she can waste as much of the paper as she wants. When Joanne asks how many of their clients are "good", her boss says he both doesn't understand what she means and doesn't actually care.
  • City People Eat Sushi: As part of the yuppie lifestyle Barry has adopted, he starts eating sushi and offers some to the JTP. Unfortunately, he put too much wasabi on it, making it too spicy to be edible. In The Tag, he offers the JTP some day-old sushi, which they reject. After eating some, Barry heads to the bathroom.
  • Easy Come, Easy Go: Barry's ecstatic at the immediate access to wealth he gains when Joanne gets a new job, only to accept losing said access in the end when Joanne decides to quit, with Geoff even calling it "Rags to Riches to Rags".
  • Human Doorstop: Adam is given the job of keeping people away from a hole in the sidewalk, which already has a traffic cone over it. He complains that he is basically doing the cone's job.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Thanks to Beverly playing up Adam's job when he calls Brea, Brea decides to return to Jenkintown and resume their relationship. Adam immediately confesses the true nature of his job, but Brea still wants to stay with him due to how anxious she's been at her university...only for Beverly to step in and tell them that, no matter how bad their lives may seem right now, they will never grow as people if they give up and try to go back to the way things used to be. Adam ends up agreeing and, after spending a little more quality time with Brea, waves goodbye to her as she takes a bus back to university instead of staying in town.
  • Look Behind You: At the bowling alley, immediately after being introduced to Trish and her son, Trish's ex-husband Wyatt happens to also be at the alley and threatens to beat Adam up for what he presumes is trying to hook up with her. Adam quickly shouts "Look, a convenient distraction!" and runs when Wyatt turns around.
  • Malaproper: In the episode's opening, when Barry tries to tell the JTP that he's now "above" them due to his girlfriend Joanne's new job, he expresses it as the "elephant in the zoo" rather than "room".
  • Rousing Speech: Barry attempts to give Joanne one when she first expresses concerns about her job, but it fails to actually rouse her. Later, Joanne seeks Erica for advice when she wants to quit her law firm job, and Erica gives her a passionate speech about not giving up...but, in a twist, on her decision to quit if she's genuinely unhappy with the position, rather than on the job itself.
  • Soul-Crushing Desk Job: Joanne genuinely does want to work in law, but in a way that directly helps people. Once she realizes that her new job at the firm is actually one of these, and for an Amoral Attorney at that, she wants to quit but worries that the people that know her will just accuse her of returning to her old "flakey" nature.
  • Title Drop: Beverly calls Johnny and Carla to show Adam "Jenkintown After Dark" after his call with Brea, in order to get his mind off of his girlfriend and job issues.
  • Yuppie: Joanne's new job lets Barry act like one, driving sports cars, spending on the company credit card, and eating sushi. Unfortunately, all this goes away when Joanne decides to quit.
